Whilst follower numbers aren’t the only metric that really matters on Twitter, there is no doubt that a wider potential audience (as long as they are properly targeted) will effectively get your messages out to more people.
Unfortunately, as with most social media marketing, there is no golden ticket to success. But, as a small business, there are a number of easy steps you can take to try and increase the number of followers you have on Twitter.
First, it is necessary to assess exactly why people follow brands (or in fact anyone) on Twitter. There are generally two main reasons:
- They know them and have some kind of relationship already in place
- They are (potentially) interested in what they have to say
So, taking this into account, there are two strategies that businesses should aim to undertake in order to increase interactions on Twitter:
Get connected
As a business, you have probably already got some sort of relationship with a great deal of people on Twitter. So make the most of it!
Whether they are customers, prospects, partners or even suppliers, make sure they know who you are on Twitter so they can follow you.
How best to do this? Make sure your Twitter profile is clearly advertised on your website to start with. You can also include an ‘add to Twitter’ button in email marketing campaigns or even more mundane communications like invoices!
Be interesting!
This might sound easier said than done, but if you are genuinely interesting on Twitter, then you will start to build up a larger list of followers, as people retweet your content or recommend you to friends.
Finding it hard to be interesting, try some of these tips:
- tweet often, but not too often
- share interesting articles
- don’t sell, sell, sell
- don’t be too commercial
- try not to publish too many ‘what you are having for breakfast’ tweets
Finally, engage
There is one final thing to remember. Twitter works best when it’s not used simply as a broadcast tool. If you are following someone that tweets something interesting, get in touch and start a conversation. This is a great way to widen your follower base and really start to get value from your Twitter account.
