You know what they say: a picture is worth a thousand words! Well, that might not totally apply with blogging (afterall you probably won’t be writing a thousand word blog post!) but images can certainly help make a post appear more interesting.
And the good news is that it isn’t hard to use the internet to find great pictures to make your blog stand out from the crowd – here’s how:
- Use Flickr – Flickr is a fantastic online image gallery where anyone can upload photos or pictures for the whole world to see (or not to see if you want to keep them private). This should be your first port of call for finding that perfect blog post image
- Remember creative commons – many of the photos and images on Flickr are covered by creative commons licenses – a type of copyright that allows you to reproduce (and sometime edit) digital content as long as you give credit. To find creative commons content on Flickr just do an advanced search and tick the appropriate check box. Remember if you are a commercial company you’ll need to tick that box too
- Give credit – whether it is creative commons or not, spread the link love and give a picture credit at the bottom of your post (see below for an example!)
- Be a bit quirky – instead of going for the same tried and tested images, why not try something a bit more interesting or off the wall. This is guaranteed to increase the number of people that will read your blog post
- Take screen grabs – if you are blogging about something online – maybe a website or perhaps something someone has said on Twitter, why not take a screen grab of the site or tweet and embed it in your blog post. This is easy to do with free tools like Jing for example
- Don’t forget video – if you are already using images, then why not move into video? YouTube is your friend here and the embed tools on the right of any video on the site makes it quick and easy to get the video into your blog post
