It has been said for a while that local social networks are the future and will bring a range of new features and functionality to social sites, buoyed by the growth of GPS enabled mobile devices like the iPhone.
Well, yesterday, Twitter jumped on this bandwagon by introducing Local Trending.
In a basic sense, Local Trending is merely Twitter’s trending topics feature (the list of popular topics and hashtags you can see on Twitter.com on the right hand side), but filtered by your local area – so if you are in the UK, you will see local trending topics, as used by other Tweeters in the country.
It is still on available to certain users, but looks like a really interesting development.
So what does it mean for small businesses?
- Local is increasingly important – in a general sense, businesses should realise that localisation is becoming important on the web and social networks – whether with Google’s local search or through local social networks like Foursquare
- Monitoring – the Twitter tool means that if you are focused on a local audience, then you can now use Twitter to monitor local trends. This might give you some very valuable audience research and might let you newsjack on issues or themes that are particularly relevant
What do you think? Have you tried out Local Trending yet?
