Each week, we ask our panel of leading social small biz thinkers for their thoughts on one of the key social media questions of the day. This week, we ask: What are the most important things to remember when starting a blog?
Here are a selection of the best responses. Let us know what you think in the comments and let us know if you’d be interested in joining the panel.
What are the most important things to remember when starting a blog?
Catherine Sheldon, the Digital PR specialist of Sage (UK)
The crucial thing to think about when starting a blog is why do you want to create one?
Having a clear purpose in mind for your blog from its beginning will help you define other parameters, such as who will read it? How often should you update it? What content and style should you use?
We recognised that creating our Sage blog would give us a fantastic opportunity to communicate with our 790,000 business customers in the UK and showcase the different personalities and expertise that exists within the company.
Having the purpose of why you are writing the blog in mind and staying true to the focus has enabled us to build a strong following on our blog in a relatively short timeframe.

It takes time to develop a following, don’t get discouraged. Be sure to acknowledge comments promptly. I’ve shortened my posts by about 200 words striving to keep them under 500 words for 2010. Promote your blog if you are using other social media tools.
Rob Jones, Venus Pest Company, Twitter
Numerous times we have heard that having a blog is one of the best, if not the best, ways to ensure your website appears on the first page of Google. After all, that’s what it’s all about right, making sure you appear when a potential client is seeking information? Although we had been fairly successful with our SEO efforts and participating in other online forums, chat rooms, and social media outlets, we could not wrap our head around blogging or the right way to do it.
The most important facts that we considered and used to successfully launch our blog at venuspest.com/blog are: where to host our blog, read other blogs, have a forum to drive traffic to your blog, create a button on your website to link to your blog and get input from everyone in the company for content.
