Research from Hitwise suggests that Facebook is quickly becoming a major traffic driver for news websites as more and more companies set up profiles on the social network and users begin to become ‘fans’ of media organisations.
As Hitwise’s Heather Hopkins states:
“Last week, Google Reader accounted for .01% of upstream visits to News and Media websites, about the same level as a year ago. Google News accounted for 1.39% of visits and Facebook 3.52%.”
RSS feed readers have never really taken off and, despite being used heavily by media organisations, Twitter still doesn’t have the same popular mass that Facebook has in terms of user numbers.
This suggests that Facebook could become the de facto portal for news distribution. This is important news for small businesses that are eager to publicise their own corporate blogs or news pages to a wider social media audience.
