Getting that all important retweet is vital to increasing your following and reach on Twitter. But it’s not as easy as it sounds. Here are 7 tips you should bear in mind:
- Quality content – it sounds obvious, but quality will shine through, so make sure you have something interesting to tweet. Think about your followers – who are they? What do they really want to see from you?
- Use adjectives – it might sound a bit spammy, but including adjectives does help with retweets. Words like ‘best’, ‘top’ and ‘ultimate’ for example can help. Obviously as with point number one, the content itself has to live up to this!
- Use hashtags – hashtags allow you tag content that might be topical or relevant to certain industry sectors or communities
- Return the favour – if you read something that someone else has tweeted and find it useful, then retweet it. You’ll probably find the user will return the favour at some point…
- Short tweets – quite a lot of tweeters like to add comments when they retweet, so leave room for them to easily do this when you tweet
- Retweet buttons – adding retweet buttons on your blog or website can encourage your visitors to tweet the message out to their followers
- Timing – think very carefully about when you tweet. Twitter tends to be busiest at the start of the working day and towards the end. Think about who you want to reach though and when they are likely to be most active on Twitter. If you are targeting different time zones, you might want to consider tweeting more than once
