Facebook has announced that 100m of its 400m monthly users are now accessing the service via a mobile device – that’s 1 in every 4 users. What is more, this is a substantial increase on the figure of 65m per month that was announced only six months ago.
As Facebook’s VP of mobile, Chamath Palihapitiya says: “We want as many people as possible to be able to access Facebook all the time, regardless of where they live or what device they carry. Today, we hit another milestone toward that goal”
So what does this milestone mean for small businesses?
Well, it is proof – if proof is needed – that mobile access to social media is very much here and now. With GPS-enabled micro-blogging services like Twitter (which was of course originally designed to be used via text message or SMS) and location-based social networks like Foursquare growing in popularity, the obvious benefits of being able to access the web and social media on the move is vital.
From a marketing standpoint it means that there are now vast possibilities to link social media to location and target users based on where they are. Social media is no longer limited to people sitting at their desk at work or in front of the computer at home.
