Over two-thirds of Facebook users in the US said a Facebook friend referral would increase their chances of purchasing a product or visiting a retailer, according to research and consulting firm Morpace.
Facebook fan pages were used by 41% of respondents to show their friends what products they support. But Morpace also found that coupons and discounts were key reasons to join a fan page, cited by 37% of users.
The research found that, on average, Facebook users were fans of nine fan pages.
So what does this mean for small businesses?
Well, retailers that are using Facebook should use every opportunity to encourage consumers and customers to join their Facebook fan pages.
Once you have built up a community, the key is to offer valuable content that encourages your community to share.
