For the next in our series of case studies looking at how small businesses are using social media, we caught up with Helen Liddell-Grainger from WordPlay
In no more than 50 words explain what your business is
WordPlay is a copywriting and proofreading service. There is currently a high demand in copywriting for websites, and when aneye for detail is needed – before an ad goes to print, prior to a website launchor before a student submits their dissertation – a proofreader is considered avaluable asset.
How do you use social media as a business?
As this type of media suggests in the word ‘social’ it is all about engaging with people – both potential clients and peers (for me) – it’s about letting people know you are out there and having a presence. It’s worth remembering that any form of social media is a long term commitment and will be unlikely to yield ‘a quick sale’.Primarily, I use ‘twitter’ not only to shout about what I do and specialise in,but also as a tool to interact with those in my line of work. I have gained new business from this social network and think it is definitely worth investing in the time and effort required.
What are your business/marketing objectives for social media?
- To establish myself as a proofreader who can help with a brief questionand therefore be kept top-of-mind.
- To respond quickly to those who announce they are looking for acopywriter or proofreader.
- To gain free advertising – either through recommendation or self-promotion!
Do you measure the success of your social media marketing? If so, how?
Not formally as it is still very much a learning curve, however, if it wasn’t yielding some success I wouldn’t still be doing it!How does social media fit in with the other marketing your company does?
As WordPlay is only a small business this is currently the only marketing I carry out.
Do you have plans to increase your use of social media in 2010?
I do not have plans to expand the use of social media this year – just maintaining what I already do and explore ways to make it work harder for me.
What would be your top 3 tips for businesses looking to get involved in social media?
1.Get involved!
2.Remember early on it will be experimental and it’s often good to just listen to start with, monitor what’s going on and being said, then engage.
3.Be prepared for the negative as well as the positive.
